While everyone is looking for ways to conserve energy, scientists are continually looking for alternate power sources. Biofuel is now one of the viable options. Many vehicles are now being designed to either run completely on biofuel, or at least partly on biofuel. This long-term effort, will result in a substantial savings to our fossil fuel supply.

When it comes to producing biofuel, you’ll be amazed at the types of materials that are being used to produce this new energy source. While corn is one of the main mixtures, lots of other types of materials are being used as well. Scientists are continually looking for other ways to increase biofuel production and make their production more cost effective. Identifying other materials and substances that might be used is just another way to expand the possibilities in this area.

For the most part, biofuels and biological fuels come from organic masses. These sources release ethanol, alcohol, or other natural gases which is then used to produce energy. Methanol is one of the most commonly used substances for vehicles today.

Cleaner burning ethanol, is also commonly used as a biofuel as well. Many times when you go to fuel your vehicle, you’ll notice that at least 10% of your gasoline is now ethanol. In fact, some states even legislate that a certain part of their gasoline mixture will contain ethanol during certain parts of the year. This step helps reduce emissions and thus vehicle air pollution in more crowded metropolitan areas. Biofuels are cheaper to produce, mix well to help extend fuel availability. Reducing emissions and pollution is an added benefit.

You may have also heard about cars running on vegetable oil that go down the road smelling like a french fry. Vegetable oils are also bio-fuels that have potential as helpful sources of energy. Some vehicles, especially diesel engines, have the ability to have an upgrade kit installed that allows them to use pure vegetable oil as a power source. This means that you can use old restaurant grease, or vegetable oil waste to power your engine. Although it does have that cooking odor smell, a gallon of vegetable oil is actually cheaper to use than regular fuel sources. In addition to the savings in cost, it also burns cleaner so your vehicle doesn’t emit the kinds of high pollution levels that it does while burning regular gasoline.

Other types of biofuels are being produced on a regular basis include waste from farms. Animal waste products from pigs, cattle or horses can be converted it into ethanol. This provides an additional stream of revenue for that dairy farm or ranch even when meat prices are down. Not only does this recycling process help the farmer keep the earth a little cleaner, but it also provides us with an alternative energy source we can use to meet our power needs.

Other types of alternate power sources come from wind and solar devices. Solar arrays are getting increasingly smaller and more efficient. In some parts of the country, homeowners are installing solar systems that are not only capable of meeting the majority of their household energy needs, but they can also generate enough extra electricity to sell some back to the local power grid. This is a win-win not only for the homeowner but for the local power company as well. Additional investments into windmills or wind turbines in areas where wind is frequently available can also generate significant amounts of energy. An example of such a wind farm are the huge windmill fields just west of Palm Springs, California. With the frequent winds coming through the mountain gorges in the area, wind power is abundant and easily made. Hopefully, with additional investments in solar and wind power, more and more farms such as these will become available to serve our energy needs.
